The market is full of fabrics labeled as “silk-like” or “silk-feel,” but these are not the same as genuine mulberry silk. Understanding the differences helps retailers offer clearer product information and avoid customer disappointment.
Genuine mulberry silk is a natural protein fiber produced by silkworms. It has a smooth, soft texture, natural breathability, and a subtle luster that changes depending on the angle of light. Imitation silk is usually made from polyester or other synthetic fibers and often has a brighter, more plastic-like shine.
Comfort is another clear difference. Real silk feels gentle against the skin and is less likely to cause irritation during long wear. Synthetic alternatives may feel cooler initially but can lack breathability and become uncomfortable in hot or humid conditions.
Durability also differs. High-quality silk can last for many years with proper care, while imitation silk may pill, lose shape, or develop a worn appearance more quickly. Color fastness and drape are usually better in genuine silk products.
For business buyers, the key is to verify fiber content and request clear product specifications. Transparent labeling builds trust, while exaggerated claims about silk content can damage brand credibility.
