How Can You Tell Real Mulberry Silk?

Telling real mulberry silk from fake or low-quality silk is easy with these simple tests:

  1. The Touch TestReal mulberry silk is smooth, cool, and slightly slippery to the touch, but it doesn’t feel plastic. Fake polyester silk feels slick and doesn’t have the natural give of real silk. Mulberry silk also has a subtle natural luster, not a bright, shiny reflection.

  2. The Water TestReal silk absorbs water slowly, while fake polyester repels it. Drop a small amount of water on the fabric — if it beads up, it’s not real silk. If it absorbs into the fabric, it’s likely real silk.

  3. The Burn Test (for scraps only)Take a small thread from the fabric and burn it. Real silk burns slowly, smells like burnt hair, and leaves soft, crumbly ash. Fake polyester melts, drips, and smells like burning plastic.

  4. The Sound TestRub the fabric between your fingers. Real silk makes a soft, rustling sound, while fake silk is silent or makes a plastic-like sound.

  5. The Price TestIf a “mulberry silk” product is priced significantly lower than expected, it’s probably fake. Pure mulberry silk is an expensive material, so prices that seem too good to be true usually are.

For wholesale buyers, always ask for fabric samples before placing large orders. Testing the sample with these methods ensures you’re getting the real mulberry silk you’re paying for.
