How to Tell If It’s Real Mulberry Silk?

With so many fake and blended fabrics on the market, it’s important to know how to tell if you’re buying real mulberry silk. These simple tests work for both finished products and raw fabric.

First, the touch test. Real mulberry silk is smooth, cool, and slightly slippery to the touch, but it doesn’t feel plastic. Fake silk (polyester) feels slick and doesn’t have the natural give of real silk. Mulberry silk also has a subtle natural luster, not a bright, shiny reflection.

Second, the water test. Real silk absorbs water slowly, while fake polyester repels water. Drop a small amount of water on the fabric — if it beads up, it’s not real silk. If it absorbs into the fabric, it’s likely real silk.

Third, the burn test (only for small scraps). Take a small thread from the fabric and burn it. Real silk burns slowly, smells like burnt hair, and leaves soft, crumbly ash. Fake polyester melts, drips, and smells like burning plastic.

Fourth, the price test. If a “mulberry silk” product is priced significantly lower than expected, it’s probably fake. Pure mulberry silk is an expensive material, so prices that seem too good to be true usually are.

For wholesale buyers, always ask for fabric samples before placing large orders. Testing the sample with these methods ensures you’re getting the real mulberry silk you’re paying for.
