What Is the Lifespan of Mulberry Silk?

The lifespan of mulberry silk depends on its quality, thickness, and how you care for it. With proper maintenance, high-quality mulberry silk can last 10+ years — far longer than most cotton or synthetic fabrics.

First, silk grade and momme weight are key. 6A grade mulberry silk with 22mm or higher momme weight is the most durable, with a typical lifespan of 8–15 years. Lower-grade silk (3A–4A) or lightweight 16mm silk has a shorter lifespan, usually 3–5 years with regular use.

Next, how you care for silk determines how long it lasts. The biggest factors that shorten silk’s lifespan include:

  • Machine washing or using harsh detergents

  • Drying silk in direct sunlight

  • Ironing silk at high temperatures

  • Storing silk in damp environments

  • Excessive washing (silk doesn’t need to be washed after every use)

To extend the lifespan of your mulberry silk: always hand wash in cold water with silk-specific detergent, air dry in the shade, and store in a cool, dry place. For bedding, use a silk-friendly pillowcase protector to reduce friction and dirt buildup.

For wholesale buyers, investing in high-grade, thick mulberry silk pays off in the long run. Longer-lasting products mean fewer returns, higher customer satisfaction, and repeat purchases from happy customers.
